Well, if we're going to be honest. I robbed it from liquefactionist. I wonder where he stole it from?

I was thinking it would be cool if someone did a program that could graph how these memes spread. I'm sure someone could get a Phd out of it.

That sounds like a very complicated undertaking. I'm not sure my pretty-little-mind could cope with the programming involved.

I don't think it would be that bad, a bit of Perl maybe to do the spidering of LJ. Most the memes have some common piece of text or link, so the searching would ok, then just follow friends and people who comment in each journal to find others, noted the date and time of each entry with the meme. Then something like graphviz to make the graph.

Of course that sound all nice and simple, I'm sure if I sat down and tried it would be harder, especially since its about two years since I did any Perl.

I just googled 'livejournal research' and it seems it's not a new idea, which does not surprise me. LJ even has a lj_research Community (which I may have to take a look at when I have a little more time).

Oh in a random other things

Random afterthought

Only semi related but Tom Coates post the last five years of his blog for people to play around with, this is what the people have come up with so far.
