Scary Bank tracking [Nov. 22nd, 2005|10:27 pm]

So I was sorting some stuff out with my bank account using online banking and clicked on a few of the adverts for other services, no big deal.

Until today, I got a phone call asking me if I wanted more details about those services, it just freaked me out a little. scary thinking they making use of all your clicks on the site to figure out what to try to sell you next and no I don't mean this to sound all tinfoil hat, just it really did jolt me. All this was a big lesson on how much information I give away everyday just going about my everyday life,

The other scary bit was they wanted lots of security details before they would tell me why they phoned me.

Well it was HSBC (the world local bank or so the advert tell me), but I can't see any of the other big banks being any better. In a way its impressive, having a customer management system that slick, but only if you stop thinking about all the privacy stuff.

Now RFIDs, adding them to passports just thinking about all the problem that will create or even adding them to all the food and clothes you buy, raises lots of questions. 99% of people are not going to take the time to understand why they are bad, so many people now are afraid of technology or at least to learn about it. In a related note, have you noticed that all these uber hi-tech solutions for our security seem to be put forward by fairly technophobic people? Do they really understand what they are proposing?

I'm doing much the same over here, giving a few quid each month to support No2ID and
The Open Rights Group.

Looking around some more it seems being asked for lots of security details when they phone you is all too common, Simon Willison has a very similar call the other week and points out some of the problems.
